How many species are there?Floristics and SystematicsWith the collections from around the world, we do a good old taxonomy - identifying and classifying organisms at hands. When the problems arise, we use a number of approaches, from morphology to DNA to figure out a new, hopefully more correct, classification of the group.
Projects:
What maintains the diversity in the community?Community assemblyWe look at the members of communities across the space and time scale to understand how these species are assembled in a tiny space - like leaves or barks of host plants.
Projects:
What is the origin of current diversity?Evolutionary ecology and phylogeneticsMolecular and phylogenetic data have allowed us to understand the relationships among existing species and also use these data to understand how, when, and hopefully why these lineages diversify to begin. Why are they so diverse? What could drive the observed level of diversity?
